Bear spray is legit. Went with a guide in Alaska to check out some bears and one just started cruising right at us. Guide herds us behind him and barely reaches toward the bear spray holstered in his belt. Bear suddenly stops and then cautiously inches a paw closer (he's like 75 ft away at this point). Guide touches the bear spray canister like he's going to pull it out and the bear hangs a hard right off the trail and straight up runs away into the woods. Guide said he knows that bear and it's been sprayed before and they never, ever forget. Take away is if you're in bear country keep that stuff on your hip (and don't forget your fashion boots).
The fashion boots! I have a 6-year-old niece who has a very similar pair from Old Navy. She wears them everywhere. Going shopping? Wear the boots. Helping in the garden? Wear the boots. Church? Wear the boots there too. Playing basketball with brothers? Yup, boots here too. It's so funny! They would kill my feet. But those boots were worth the (discounted) price because she loves them and wears them all the time.
